Designing My First Competition Robot

Lessons from a rookie season of prototyping, breaking, and rebuilding a chassis that finally held together on match day.

Designing My First Competition Robot

Every good robot starts with a bad first draft. When I sketched my first competition chassis, I wanted it to do everything: climb, sort, launch, and look fast. It ended up doing none of those things well.

The turning point was scoping down. I picked one job for the robot, a reliable line follower with clean autonomous routines, and let that shape every design choice. Suddenly the wiring, the weight distribution, and the code all had a north star.

Iteration became my favorite word. I logged what broke, what wobbled, and what surprised me each build night. By the third revision the chassis was lighter, the sensors were shielded, and my code was half as long. The scoreboard finally started reflecting the work.
